Multi-Disciplinary Simulation for an Airway Crisis
Dr Thomas Brown, Anaesthetic Fellow, Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand
Authors List
Introduction
During an airway crisis, Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) surgeons and anaesthetists work together to provide vital patient care. In contrast to anaesthetic trainees, ORL trainees have limited exposure to simulation during their training. The Christchurch anaesthetic simulation team was approached to organise a simulation for the New Zealand Society of Head and Neck Surgery (NZSOHNS) registrar conference on 1st August 2022. Two multi-disciplinary scenarios were created to fulfil this need. Multi-disciplinary simulation is a new approach to learning for ORL and anaesthetic trainees.
Aims
Observe ORL and anaesthetic trainees within a multi-disciplinary simulation with the view to improve patient care
Methods
During the NZSOHNS registrar conference on 1st August 2022, trainees will undergo two multi-disciplinary simulations involving a ‘can’t intubate, can’t oxygenate’ event and a tracheostomy emergency. Quantitative and qualitative assessments will be made during these simulations.
